12-Months
Where do you want your business to be in five years? That’s one of those questions you think you’re supposed to be able to answer easily. But most of the time, not only will you struggle to answer it, but it’s actually pointless anyway!
Because five years in business is a loooooong time. Who knows what will happen between now and then (another Brexit, the next covid, 3 more recessions and 26 Prime Ministers!) Your business will change, your life will change and you will change. Trying to picture exactly what you want all of that to look like several years from now can feel so detached from reality that the goals you set don’t have much bearing on the decisions you’re making today.
That’s why I help my clients to work with 12-month goals instead.
Because a year is long enough to make significant changes to your business, but close enough that you can create a really tangible picture of what success would look like, and how you can influence it with your actions today. And I really mean picture it, not just pick out some random numbers that sound about right.
With 12 month goals you can really go deep on who you want to work with, what you want to sell, who else will be involved in the business, what your diary is going to look like. And juicy things like … hat sort of work are you doing yourself? And what time are you finishing because you’ve got something else you’d much rather be doing that evening?
In this week’s Business Tips video, I share a simple visualisation exercise I regularly use with my coaching clients to help them get beyond vague ambitions and create a much clearer picture of the business they actually want to be running 12 months from now.
