Get Paid On Time
Is there anything more frustrating than doing a great job but still not getting paid time?
You know the work was brilliant (probably smashed it out of the park and 3 times round the block!) and the customer’s really happy.
But payment day just rolls on by without a whisper. You check the bank account for 3 or 4 days afterwards assuming it’s an oversight and they’ll sort it tomorrow. Surely, they’re bound to, aren’t they?
With each passing day your heart sinks a little bit lower, and your discomfort raises that little bit higher. Until eventually you know you’re going to have to bite the bullet and chase them for payment.
But you’d really rather the world just swallowed you up and you never needed to have that embarrassing conversation or send that uncomfortable, needy email.
And here’s the kicker. Soooo many people feel embarrassed about chasing for payment. I bet that’s happened to you hasn’t it?
You worry about offending your customer.
Worry they might cancel the rest of the work you’re booked in to do.
Worry that they’ll think you’re desperate or that you have a tiny business that’s on the rocks.
Worry about what to say, how to say it, when to say it. About how direct or assertive to be. About how many times you should apologise for your audacity in chasing them.
All that worry for you, while they seem to be completely oblivious.
I’ve lost count of the number of hours (I think it’s in the bazillions by now) I’ve spent with clients helping them to draft chaser emails that sound perfectly professional and not remotely needy.
But the key to changing all of this is to create a system. A consistent professional system that you can follow every single time without fail so that the whole things is just a process with minimal emotion attached to it. Happy days!
For your customers, the shift to regular prompt payment comes when they see that you’re well organised, professional, consistent and that you’ll be on the ball with your chasers. Once they realise they’ll be nagged quickly (and repeatedly if needed) they’ll stop being so sloppy with their payments and pull their finger out.
So that’s why this week’s video shares 3 of my favourite tips to help you get paid on time every time (well, let’s be honest, it’ll be nearly every time because even I can’t show you how to eliminate every single duffer!)
I’ve shared advice about invoicing on time, chasing consistently using scripts and templates, and sticking to your boundaries to prove your professionalism.
Small tips, but mahoosive stress relievers!
Have a nosy and let me know what resonates with you the most.
