Are You Losing Potential Customers
I love this time of year because I start off lots of conversations with clients about what they want to achieve next year. Talking about all the possibilities, and about growing the business in the best way to make sure they have a great life, and not just a great turnover is really exciting.
We naturally reflect on this year and the bazillions of highlights and lowlights. We talk about their favourite customers. And of course, their least favourite ones who they never want to work with ever again! 🤣
And we talk about the things they almost got right this year but know they can really ramp up next year.
One thing that often comes up in these conversations are ‘the ones that got away.’
You know those potential customers you would absolutely LOVE to work with, and you’re convinced it’s going to happen but somehow the opportunity just fizzles out? Well, we talk about all of those and how we can do things differently next year to make sure those slippery little suckers don’t manage to wriggle off the hook again!
It might come as a surprise to know that one of the key questions to ask yourself if you keep missing out on those brilliant opportunities is whether you’re just being too helpful.
What I see so often is that your passion for helping people and your personal values around delivering great value can mean that you end up giving too much away too soon.
It sounds crazy to suggest that you could lose out on business by being too helpful, but it’s such an easy trap to fall into. Because by sharing all the fantastic ideas you’ve got for your potential clients and telling them about all the amazing things you can do together you create two potential risks …
Firstly, you may give them so much exciting info about the next steps that they could convince themselves they know enough to crack on on their own, and they don’t actually need you. Which we both know is rubbish because even if they manage a half decent stab at it on their own it wouldn’t be a patch on the results of them working with you.
Or, secondly, you might accidentally create as much trepidation as anticipation if you share too many ideas. They might just think the whole thing sounds a bit overwhelming, so they’ll choose not to go ahead.
If you’re wondering whether there’s a chance you’re losing potential customers by being too helpful, take a look at this week’s tips video that digs into this in more detail. It might be just what you need to help you bag those dream clients and reinvigorate your own excitement about the opportunities ahead.
