Small Business Owner Overwhelm
If I ran a survey on the most frequently used words in small business, what do you think would win? I reckon ‘AI’ and especially ‘ChatGPT’ would be right up there at the moment. ‘Rollercoaster’ is a long-standing popular term. And of course, there’s good old ‘overwhelm’ which quite literally never goes away!
I know the most overwhelmed I’ve ever felt was when I accidentally ended up with 2 ‘jobs’. Running my own business and being the interim CEO at Active Cheshire at the height of covid. That was supposed to be a day or so a week and very quickly turned into 3 days a week on top of my own business so it’s fair to say it was quite demanding!
It’s very easy to feel that the to-do list is constantly overwhelming in your business though, isn’t it?
When you’re wearing those famous 3 hats as described so well in Michael Gerber’s The E-Myth… you’re the Technician doing all the work; the Manager trying to create the systems and build consistency; and you’re the Entrepreneur trying to set the strategy.
We all know that the one that gets parked is constantly the strategy role. Yes, that stuff is important, but everything else feels more urgent doesn’t it? (A little nod to Steven Covey there – this week’s email is turning into the business shelf at your local library here! 🤓)
In soooo many of my own clients when they first come to work with me the thing I see is that they desperately need to shift their mindset into that Entrepreneur / Strategist role. But their inner control freak won’t let them relinquish the control (or the budget) so that other people can help them out with that stuff.
When you’re trying to actively grow your business but still doing absolutely everything yourself, it’s virtually the same as having 3 jobs. It’s no wonder it all feels so overwhelming! 🥵
So, that’s why this week’s video talks about the REAL causes of overwhelm in your small business. It talks about the mindset shift you’ve got to be willing to work through to move yourself into that entrepreneur space, and the systems you’ll need to build to create the foundations that will support all of that.
