Happy New Year!
Have You Set Any Resolutions?
I hope you’ve enjoyed a great break and you’re feeling refreshed and excited about a great year ahead. I LOVE this time of year when there’s such a focus on opportunity and growth.
One thing I really don’t like about this time of year though is New Year’s resolutions.
We all know the stats about most resolutions going down the pan by mid-February at the latest (or mid-January in most cases!) That’s definitely not a positive, inspiring statistic, is it? I think I worked out a few years ago though why it happens, and it just convinced me of the futility of anything to do with setting resolutions at this time of year.
I mean, let’s start off by looking at the definition of ‘resolution’. (My English teacher would be impressed with me digging into vocabulary, maybe I might actually make her proud one of these days! 🤣)
Resolution = “the quality of being determined or resolute. Making a firm decision.”
Blimey, it sounds like punishment, doesn’t it? I mean, there’s certainly nothing in there that has me feeling motivated or positive. It just feels like you’re lining yourself up for pain and endurance!
And that’s exactly what New Year’s resolutions are. They’re almost always a commitment to either stop doing something you really like (like eating chocolate 🍫or drinking wine 🍷) or they’re a promise to start doing something you really don’t want to do (47 gym visits every week or completing that boring course you instantly regretted paying for!)
Growing a business is never short of challenges so adding a load of commitments on top of that which only make you miserable is definitely not an exciting plan, is it?
Now I know you might think that growth is all about hard work, endurance, dedication, commitment, and perseverance (anyone for the 5am club? 🥴) And you’d be right … to a degree. There has to be balance though, or why would any of us bother? You need to build in exciting goals, opportunities that you’re looking forward to, and a genuine enjoyment for what you do.
And that’s why I think New Year’s resolutions are a complete waste of time and energy. You don’t need to bother committing to being more focused, spending less time on social media, doing all your admin perfectly and generally just being a right old swotty pants every day! And you definitely don’t need to spend time focusing on your flaws and obsessing about how to change.
Because your sub-conscious brain will do an outstanding job of holding you back if that’s your approach. Your sub-conscious will actively seek out and emphasise whatever you ask it to focus on. So, if you focus on the negatives that you want to cut out, reduce or avoid, your sub-conscious will just obsess over and emphasise those things. You’ll just attract more negatives!
Whereas if you focus instead on what you DO want, and on the positive things you want to improve or increase, then your beautiful sub-conscious will work with you rather than against you.
I have a great little exercise to help you clarify the exciting and positive things you want to focus on this year, if you struggle to pin down your goals or plans. And that’s what this week’s video walks you through.
So please take 5 minutes to watch, and let me help you plan an exciting, positive and inspiring year in your business. I know you’re ready to grow, evolve and improve this year, and my video will help you do exactly that.
Of course, if you read or watch and love this idea but struggle to apply it for yourself, then I’d love to help you work on this. Just send me a message and let’s arrange a chinwag.
