Leads Not Converting?
When I first started my business (back in the jurassic ages!), I had a very meaty marketing budget set aside to generate lots of lovely leads quickly so I could crack on with my quest for global domination straight away no delay.
The ActionCOACH franchise I worked with recommended a telemarketing company, so I didn’t even need to create a marketing plan. All I had to do was convert the gold-plated leads they generated for me.
But ohhhhh I was rubbish at that bit! I burnt through every single lead they generated and incinerated my entire marketing budget too.
A ‘baptism of fire’ really didn’t cover it!
I made the mistake of thinking that once you’d generated leads, converting them would be really easy. But how wrong I was! 🤦♀️
This is such an easy trap to fall into though when soooo much of the business advice we see online is all about marketing. About visibility, consistency, authenticity, ideal client personas, you name it. Almost none of those people though go on to talk about conversion or about sales processes, or smart follow ups.
They don’t even explain what kind of conversations you need to have with all the brilliant leads they’re obsessed about you generating so that prospects become customers.
The inference is that leads equals clients.
Ahhhh what tosh!
Add that to the fact that most of us are semi-obsessed with the terror of ever being seen as a pushy or manipulative sales person and it’s a great recipe for frustration and floundering. Because the truth is that you HAVE to spend as much time, energy and effort on perfecting your sales process as you do on your marketing. One without the other doesn’t work.
But the great news is that becoming good at sales, and great at converting leads does NOT have to involve sleazy sales tactics, pushy conversations or emotional blackmail. It involves great processes that help you capture you at your best consistently.
It involves small steps that create a big impact on your bottom line.
These days I love sales. I love the fact that for every lead who I convert into a client, there’s another business owner who’s going to grow, flourish and prosper with my help.
I love sales because I know it means I get to help somebody build a brilliant business that allows them to support their family, build a great team, create jobs, and a bazillion other amazing things.
I mean seriously, when you think of it that way, sales are awesome aren’t they!! 🚀
I know, I know – that’s easy for me to say. There’s no point just preaching though unless I give you some concrete advice and clear steps to help you improve your sales process and become more confident at converting leads into customers.
