Ready To Hire?
I had a grrrreat time talking to a client on her podcast a few weeks ago. I’m still listening back to it in the car I enjoyed it that much! 🤣
Our topic was leadership in a small business and we talked about everything from the stress of her first ever hire, to the path she’s now on of delegating as much as possible so she can really step up into a more strategic leadership role.
She hired her first ever employee about 7 years ago now, and it was such a huge step that both of us can remember exactly where we were when we talked about which of 2 possible candidates she should take on. She had a choice between a lady who wanted a part-time role on a self-employed basis (so virtually zero risk) versus somebody younger, less experienced, seeking a full time employed role but really eager and full of energy.
If you want to know which one she chose you’ll have to email me for the answer or, even better, listen to the podcast – it really is fab!
You can find it on apple podcasts here

The thought of hiring is always daunting isn’t it? Even if it’s your tenth, twentieth or one hundredth employee there are always questions around timing, the ideal role, the perfect candidate, whether you can actually afford it, and how to make sure you don’t hire a complete div!
It’s no wonder most people leave hiring their first employee until they have absolutely no choice because the ship’s about to sink due to overloading is it?
Most people delay hiring because they’re so worried it might not work out and they’re terrified of having to tell someone they’ve lost their job.
But I can honestly say that in 16 years, I’ve never had a client that hired someone and couldn’t then keep them on because there wasn’t enough work. The truth is that hiring somebody creates the perfect environment to attracting more work, because you’ve got more time (and sometimes more support) with your marketing.
You’ve got more time to follow up all those leads that you’ve let go cold.
You’ve got capacity to do nice things like get back in touch with previous customers, who you loved working with and have been wanting to get in touch with for ages but just haven’t had the time.
Doing those ‘nice-to-do’ things will almost always bring in more work. And that work pays the salary of your new hire.
Happy days!
Of course, I know it’s much easier for me to talk about this than for you to take that leap into hiring for yourself. So that’s why this week’s tips video walks you through the right time to hire your first employee and gives you lots of food for thought about exactly how that would work in your own business.
I’d love to hear about your own hiring plans so please get in touch and let me know! Honestly, you have no idea how excited I get when somebody actually replies to one of these emails! 🎉🎉
And of course if you’re stuck in the dilemma right now of feeling like you need to hire but being terrified that it might all go wrong, why not book in for a 1 hour strategy session with me and we can come up with some timings and an action plan that help you feel confident, prepared and ready!
