Why Business Goals Don’t Work
Every January I share a video about setting business goals. I usually tell you to ignore everything to do with New Years resolutions – because we all know they don’t work.
But the truth is that setting goals is easy. There are always a bazillion things to do, to improve, to grow, to evolve, to implement. Coming up with new goals is a doddle isn’t it?
So how come we get to this stage every year and most of those goals are in the recycle bin just as it’s getting ready for its final emptying of the year?
January’s goals have a very rude habit of feeling tired and dusty at this time of the year. You started on them with vigour and verve earlier in the year, but life, the world and everything has constantly dragged you off course and forced you to concentrate on other things until those exciting, shiny goals feel like drab, neglected signs of your lack of progress.
It’s easy to write off the whole thing & just decide that business goals simply don’t work!
Blimey this is a bit depressing isn’t it – not my usual jovial, encouraging tone at all. OK – let’s see what we can do about that, because there are always possibilities and opportunities, I just need to help you focus on those.
This is why I wanted to talk about goals now though, rather than waiting until January when the world and his wife are all bleating on about having your best year ever, living your best life, being the best version of yourself and all that other annoyingly positive stuff. 🤣
Because the truth is that there IS still time to hit some of those goals this year. But only if you’re really focused.
And therein lies the key. I mean goals are smashing, great, super, lovely. They’re the perfect Bullseye (see what I did there??) But they’re nothing without focus. If you set too many goals, focusing on any one of them becomes impossible, so by trying to achieve too much, you’ll probably end up achieving far less. 🤦♀️
So, this week’s video has two aims. My tips will help you focus on less goals that are more meaningful and much more likely to be achieved. And that might just give you a bonus surge of energy and focus to get one of those dusty January goals back out from the proverbial bottom drawer and get it nailed before the end of the year. Wouldn’t that be amazing?
How much more confidence would you have to set new exciting goals for next year, if you could rattle of one of this year’s outstanding goals?
So please watch the video, and feel free to email me with your feedback, comments, gripes or fascinating rambles!
