Is Tolerance A Terrible Thing?
If ever there was a time to convince us that tolerance is a virtue it’s the madness that’s going on in the political world right now! Don’t panic though, this email is NOT going to dig into politics. I’ll save that for heated in-person debates!
For now, let’s leave our political ‘leaders’ to their own devices and steer ourselves in a different direction. I’d love to say it’s a more positive direction, but actually it’s a bit of a whinge and possibly a well-intentioned rollocking so I think ‘positive’ might be a misrepresentation! Sorry. 🤣
Because I want to talk to you about why tolerance is such a terrible thing for business.
If you’ve been here a while you’ll know it’s not the first time I’ve talked about this. It’s probably not even the tenth time. I’m guessing it’s something more like the eleventy-billionth time. But that’s because it’s so important.
It’s something I go back to regularly with all my 1-to-1 clients because they always find something they can improve on whenever we talk about it. But a few months down the line they inevitably find that tolerance has slipped back into their business and it’s leading to wasted time, frustrating clients, or clunky systems.
Of course we’re brought up to see tolerance as a positive, admirable trait and even as a sign of character and compassion. It must be a good thing, mustn’t it?
Well yes, in the right circumstances it can be. But when we’re talking about business, tolerance is more likely to lead to feeling like a doormat; giving your time, skills or experience away too cheaply; or putting yourself & your business development last on the list. Again!
You don’t have to become a ruthless, money obsessed business magnate to recognise that tolerance is getting in your way, rather than helping you. You CAN still have strong ethics and a caring attitude. But you can also recognise the things in your business that aren’t serving you well, and that you’d be happier not putting up with.
So please have a look at this week’s video for more ideas about the things that you might be inadvertently tolerating in your own business. I really would love to hear back from you about anything that jumps out to you, so let me know.
If I’m touching a nerve here and you know that you need help to be less tolerant and more focused in your own business, then please take a look at the different ways I can support you here: https://taylory.co.uk/how-i-can-support/
