How To Sell Without Feeling Salesy
When I first started my business I spent a LOT of money with a telemarketing company to generate leads.
It was expensive but all part of the fancy pants business plan underpinned by my fabulous naivety that everyone would instantly want what I was offering because I was so enthusiastic about it myself.
It really never crossed my mind that I’d need to sell to them – see, I told you I was naive! 🤣
Of course the problem with needing to sell to them was that in my head, selling was always a bit sleazy and unwelcome and the thought of ever coming across like that was horrendous.
I knew that the only way I could make it work was to find out how to sell without ever feeling salesy.
Because ‘proper sales’ always gave me shivering flashbacks to the Kirby vacuum salesman who point blank refused to leave our house even after we’d both separately gone and got changed to go out & he knew he had a restaurant reservation. The only way we got him out of the house was to sign up for his 3 bazillion quid vacuum cleaner & then phone up the next day to cancel – what a waste of everyone’s time that was!
The whole concept of selling was completely new to me. And just like so many of you, the thought of it left me cold.
I didn’t want to do it. I didn’t see why people couldn’t see how awesome I was and how much I could help, and just want to fall all over themselves to work with me (what’s wrong with some people??? 🤣)
But we all know that unless you work out how to sell, you’re always going to struggle in business.
Of course this is where it gets interesting because ‘how to sell’ doesn’t ever have to involve mamipulation or pushiness. It doesn’t have to involve fancy presentations or special skills so that you nail the ABC of sales. Always Be Closing – I mean seriously, who’s daft idea was that??
This concept though of becoming comfortable with sales in a way that never every feels salesy, is something I’m asked about constantly because it’s such a strong feeling amongst small business owners who care about value and service.
So, of course, this weeks video focuses on exactly this.
I’ve shared 3 of my favourtie tips. The first is about shifting your midset so you realise that you’re really not selling anyway, you’re simply helping somebody to buy something they already need. Happy days!
Plus tips about how to help somebody make a decision to buy in way that feels comfortable and natural, and advice about how and when to follow up so more awesome people turn into clients but you don’t ever feel sleazy or salesy.
And what’s not to love about that?
