12 Month Business Goals
Are you someone who loves to chase a target? Are you much more motivated if you’ve set clear goals that inspire you to get crackalacking?
Or do you avoid setting goals because they’ve never really worked for you.
Although I regularly run 90 day planning workshops (next one on the 5th September, hint hint 😉) I’m a massive fan of setting 12 month business goals. For me that’s the perfect timescale because it’s not so far away that it’s intangible and hard to connect to. But it’s also not so short that it feels like a constant source of stress.
Can you remember what was happening in your business 12 months ago? I bet it seems like forever ago now doesn’t it? But at the same time it’s gone in the blink of an eye hasn’t it?
Of course there’s also lots of juicy psychological evidence to show that setting goals in your business plays a significant role in how successful you’ll be. Your Reticular Activating System (that’s a dead important part of your brain according to scientists) is sparked into action when you set goals. It’s the part that means you see the same thing everywhere – decide you’re going to buy a white Mercedes and every second car you see after that is a white Mercedes.
The cars haven’t changed though. There aren’t suddenly twice as many white Mercedes on the road. You’ve just given your brain a signal that white Mercedes are really interesting, so now instead of them all fading into the background, they grab your attention.
Your sub-conscious brain works like this constantly. It’s seeing 86 bazillion things every day (*that may not be scientifically accurate but you get my gist!) and it makes a choice about which tiny proportion it brings to your attention.
And that right there, is one of the primary reasons you need to set 12 month goals in your business. Because all of a sudden, the opportunities to hit those goals will be flagged up by your subconscious brain, instead of fading into the background as they have been doing for the last few months (or years!)
If you ever get the feeling that your business is a hamster-wheel … if it feels like groundhog day with the same results and the same challenges month after month … setting clearer goals would break that chain and help you start to achieve the bigger and better things that you know are at your finger-tips but they just keep eluding you.
