Accountability
Shall we talk about Marcus Rashford this week?
If you’re not a football fan, don’t panic, this isn’t really about football. It’s about accountability.
And you already know about accountability because it’s generally the difference in business between having great plans that back up your brilliant ideas; and actually sticking to the plans to make things happen.
So, what has Marcus Rashford got to do with this I hear you excitedly cry? 😲
Well, let me tell you … there’s a right kerfuffle going on at Manchester United at the moment. A new Manager has arrived and within weeks he’s dropped Rashford (one of United’s most high-profile players) from the team. And he’s publicly stated that it’s because Rashford doesn’t give the maximum effort in training and isn’t meeting the training standards the new Manager expects.
Rashford is NOT holding himself accountable!
Especially as his response has been to say that he’s ‘ready for a new challenge’ and would like to leave the club. How’s that for avoidance?
** Don’t worry – I promise this all links back to business. Bear with me, we’re coming to the juicy bit! **
There are 2 things at play in this situation.
- Rashford isn’t holding himself accountable to train at the level he should
- There is a clear clash of accountability styles between manager and player
You see, I absolutely believe that we all need accountability to help us stick to our plans and hit our goals. But I also very firmly believe that we have to find the right style of accountability for us. We’re not all the same. We’re not motivated in the same way. We’re not demotivated by the same things. We’re unique, quirky, unpredictable beings.
One of the few predictable things about us though, is that we’re ALL likely to put our customer’s requests and demands ahead of dedicating time to our own businesses. And we can all talk ourselves out of sticking to our business development stuff in a way that we wouldn’t dream of dodging a client request.
If you had a client meeting in your diary, there’s no way you’d decide that morning that you didn’t really have the energy or that other things were clearly more important. So why do you do that when you’re supposed to be working on your own business?
So this week’s tips video is all about accountability and how this might be impacting your ability to grow your business in the way you’d really love to. Please watch and steal all the ideas I share about different ways you can build more accountability into your own business.
I’m such an advocate for the power of accountability that I created my very own Accountability Squad this time last year.
The irony of having not stuck to my growth plans for the group because I was so distracted by the lunatic Guide Dog puppy who came to live with us last January is definitely not lost on me! 🤦♀️
So this year, my mission is to grow the group to help lots and lots of you stop talking about, thinking about, faffing about your goals, and actually make them happen instead. We can do this!!
My group is a twice-weekly, very light touch place for you to make a weekly commitment to your business, and to feedback on how you’ve done at the end of the week. You don’t need to speak to me personally for a high-level grilling. And there’ll definitely be no public slatings about not giving the maximum in your business! Just gentle nudges and support to keep you on track.
And if you hate Facebook groups you could just reply to the reminder emails rather than posting publicly if that’s your natural style.
If you’ve got something on your list that you’ve been getting around to for aaaaages, this could be the perfect way to make it happen. Lucy used the group last year to help her finish her website. Something she’d been promising herself she’d do for months (and maybe years 🤣). She committed to one task every week to develop her website. Nothing crazy or unachievable, just small consistent progress that compounded into a big effort over time.
And all this is just a bargain £25 per month, with no minimum tie-in so you could just try it out for a month and see whether it helps you. You’d be crazy not to! 😉
