Do You Have Consistency In Your Business?
Can you believe that our slightly crazy future guide dog puppy, Pippin has been with us for 4 months now. And I can honestly say that the phrase ‘never a dull minute’ was coined with him in mind, I’m absolutely certain of it!
He’s a bouncy, sociable, constantly excited / over-excited labrador. Training him (which let’s be honest is waaay more about training US than training HIM!) has been eye-opening I can tell you.
There’s one rock-solid principle that runs through everything we do with him though, and that’s the importance of consistency.
It’s why we’ve consistently said “Pippin, four paws on the floor!” 18 bazillion times every day for 4 months. (It doesn’t stop him checking out what’s on the worktops (yet) but it does mean the paws come down much faster and there’s no stealing or chewing things he shouldn’t – like laptop cables or glasses! 🤦♀️)
It’s fascinating though, how much easier it is to be consistent when you’re accountable to someone else. Guide dogs aren’t allowed to sit on the furniture, so we’ve had stacks of cardboard boxes on all our lounge furniture for weeks. And finally it’s working. After consistently lifting him off the furniture or enticing him away with toys or treats elevently gazillion times, we’ve just removed the boxes and he’s not trying to leap up as soon as our backs are turned. Yet!
There’s not a shred of doubt in my mind that if Pippin was our dog rather than a future Guide Dog we’d have given in ages ago and just let him on the sofa. And then spent the next 10 years wishing we’d stuck to our guns more consistently!
Of course, I’ve got to tell you about the amazing similarities between training Pippin and coaching Small Business Owners (you’ve known that was coming since the opening line haven’t you?) Because the main purpose of our training with Pippin at this stage is to help him ignore distractions. So he’s really just like you – he’s not allowed to chase squirrels and shiny things either! 🤣
And just like my obsessive consistency with Pippin, persuading you of the power of consistency in your business is something of a life’s mission!
Consistency is so often shrugged off as something that’s trivial or restrictive or that ‘doesn’t really work in my business’ but it’s benefits are mahoosively underestimated.
It’s definitely NOT about boxing you in. It’s actually about helping you to streamline and simplify things. It’s about giving you back time, brainspace and the chance to make consistent progress on your business goals.
