Why Business Feels Harder As It Grows
If your business feels harder now than it did a few years ago, you’re not imagining it.
Many capable business owners reach a point where things feel heavier, more complicated, and way more stressful than they expected.
In the early days, business often feels simpler (although you generally only realise that once you’re looking back a few years later!)
There were fewer clients. Fewer decisions. Less financial responsibility. Often it was just you, your laptop, and a clear sense of control (at least some of the time).
As the business grows, that simplicity disappears.
You’re suddenly responsible for more. More clients, more money moving through the business, more admin, more compliance, and more pressure to get decisions right. Dropping the ball has consequences now, not just for you but for others too.
Other people also enter the picture. Team members, suppliers, collaborators, and ever-more demanding clients. People are one of the biggest growth challenges in any business because they’re so unpredictable. Managing expectations, emotions, and performance takes far more energy than most business owners expect.
On top of that, decisions get more complex. Pricing changes, hiring choices, and strategic shifts carry more risk than they used to. It’s normal to hesitate more and to second-guess yourself when the stakes are higher.
This is why so many business owners quietly think, “Wasn’t this easier when it was just me and a laptop?” That thought isn’t a failure signal. It’s a growth signal.
This video explores why business often feels harder as it grows, why that pressure is normal, and how to reframe it so it doesn’t knock your confidence or send you backwards.
If your business feels harder right now, it may simply mean you’ve outgrown the stage you’re in.
